The Makana Foundation exists to ensure that no family is left behind when it comes to safety, nourishment, and dignity at home. Based in Michigan, we are a volunteer-driven nonprofit dedicated to providing nourishing meals and essential home repairs for individuals and families facing hardship.
We believe that a secure home and a full plate are more than basic needs — they are the foundation of hope. Through community partnerships, donor support, and hands-on service, we step in where help is needed most. Whether it’s rebuilding a damaged space or delivering a warm meal, we meet people with compassion, respect, and practical action.
Every meal shared and every home restored brings us closer to our mission: Every Meal, Every Home — A Foundation of Hope.
Our food rescue program was born in the wake of COVID-19, when we witnessed firsthand how many families in our community were struggling to access basic necessities. What began as a small family effort to share what we had quickly grew into a mission of its own.
Today, our food rescue is powered by partnerships with generous local businesses, farmers, and fellow food recovery organizations. Instead of letting good food go to waste, we collect and redistribute it directly to individuals and families who need it most.
Because we are family-run, every box we pack and every delivery we make is handled with care and dignity. This isn't just about food — it's about connection, compassion, and making sure no one in our community is left behind.
Everyone deserves to feel safe and comfortable in their own home — and that’s exactly why our home repair program exists. We serve veterans, seniors, and low-income individuals and families who may not have the means to maintain or modify their homes on their own.
From fixing a leaky faucet to installing accessibility ramps, lowering cabinets, and making mobility-friendly adjustments, our skilled professionals step in wherever help is needed. No job is too small when it makes a big difference in someone’s daily life.
As a community-based effort, we also rely on the generosity of licensed and insured contractors who are willing to donate their time and talents. If you’re a tradesperson with a heart to serve, we’d love to partner with you to restore safety, dignity, and independence—one home at a time.
